Michael Edward Borne SWS
Watercolor Background Information
I am a professional architect and an amateur artist. I like the word "amateur" - It's derived from the French for "fancier" or "lover". I've had a love affair with watercolor painting for years. I learned that no one is born an artist: Anyone with the desire can enjoy painting and soon learn to paint well. I believe one learns to paint by painting.
I began to sketch at age four by tracing the comic strips in the Sunday newspaper. I soon learned that I could replicate the figures from memory without the need for tracing. Architecture school reinforced my freehand drawing and perspective skills. In Dallas I was blessed to know excellent watercolor painters and teachers.
I use computer-aided drafting and rendering in my architectural work, but I love the feel and texture of manually applying pigment to paper. No computer software can replace that experience.
In recent years I have taught watercolor and sketching. Teaching watercolor to others enriches my own knowledge of and enthusiasm for watercolor painting. I have conducted classes at SMU continuing education program, Dallas Arboretum, and workshops in the Prosper area.
This January my wife Carolyn and I will celebrate our 56th wedding anniversary. Carolyn is a retired elementary school teacher with a master’s degree in early childhood Learning. She is my mentor.
